About Mahatma Gandhi Eye Hospital,Rangamatia

MAHATMA GANDHI EYE HOSPITAL
Mahatma Gandhi Eye Hospital (MGEH), a rural based pioneering community eye hospital was unveiled in the sacred hands of His Excellency Late Sri Krishnakant, the then Vice President of India in the presence of Sj. Naveen Patnaik, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Orissa and other distinguished dignitaries on 28th December 2000. Since then, through an untiring effort, group dynamism and high dedication this monument of North-Orissa has been performing a leading role in eradicating blindness in Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak& Keonjhar districts of Orissa and also in the neighboring states West Bengal and Jharkhand.
Mahatma Gandhi Eye Hospital, the epitomized unit of Antyodaya Chetana Mandal (ACM) believes blindness to be among the foremost obstacles in the socio-economic development of a person since it transforms a person into a living burden. It closes all possible ways of living with dignity and self-dependency. ACM, during its deep preoccupations with the tribal & downtrodden in different parts of Orissa had witnessed the high magnitude of blindness in the tribal & rural belts and also internalized the gravity of that growing concern.
http://mgeh.mayurbhanj.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/enjoyingnewsight-300x219.jpgFrom that realization, Community Based Rehabilitation Programme in different blocks of Mayurbhanj was implemented by ACM in collaboration with Sight Savers International (SSI). But the long standing dream of ACM of eradicating blindness from its working zones got a concrete shape with the emergence of Mahatma Gandhi Eye Hospital. However ACM is very much indebted to SSI, DBCS and Dept. of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India, VIA, Germany etc. for rendering their support and good wishes towards the successful materialization of this eye care institution and for joining their hands with ACM for pioneering a movement “Right to Sight and Reaching the Un-reached”. However, it also credits the good wishes and thoughtful propositions of the well wishers in materializing the success and rewriting the fate of thousands falling to eternal darkness.
Mahatma Gandhi Eye Hospital is a symbol of ‘Gram Swaraj’- the basic value premise of Mahatma Gandhi. At the very outset of 21st century, the existence of MGEH in a tribal inhabited remote village like Rangamatia speaks a lot of changes about to happen in rural horizons in present context. It has emerged as one of the best possible haunting grounds for the rural poor people having no capacity to afford the transport and treatment in the cities and also has come out as an eye opener for the policy makers and high executives deciding the fate of the ruralites. During its eight years of dedicated service, it has proved itself as a synonym of quality eye care service. By means of high quality of modern instruments & equipments and best service with commitment & sincerity, it has become the apex eye care institution in North Orissa. It believes the unawareness and ignorance to be among the prime reasons leading to high density blindness in rural belts. Hence apart from curative measures in the hospital, it has also emphasized on the awareness generation of the people.

We have only one pair of eyes… and we take it for granted…!
Every individual has the right to sight and there is no better feeling than making a sightless to sight the world with a new vision and self-confidence. We invite institution/s & individual/s to join our mission in order to reach the millions living in darkness and to eliminate blindness in a best possible way. We believe that together we can make a difference.

It is common knowledge that as we age, the risk to our eyes from diseases like cataract, Diabetic Retinopathy, Macular Degeneration, Glaucoma, Refractive errors etc increases.
Believing in credo of “prevention is better than cure” Mahatma Gandhi Eye Hospital proactively holds screening camps to guide people to spread awareness.
We advise you to:
  1.  Visit an eye care specialist  once every 12 months  with you and your family .
  2. Child – at least once before 5 years of age if any watering or abnormality
  3. Visit an ophthalmologist   immediately in case of any of the following eye problem.
  • If  your vision becomes blurry and you have trouble reading signs or books.
  • If you see double or see floaters or spots.
  • If your eyes are hurt and get red.
  • If you feel pressure in your eyes.
  • If straight lines do not look straight.
  • If you can not see things at the site  as you used to.
  • If once in a year  if you are diabetic .
  • If your spectacle  power  is changing frequently.
Remember, an eye test doesn’t  just tell you how short or long –sighted you are. It can also reveal eye conditions that may be more serious , and some of these conditions, if diagnosed early, can be prevented from developing further .
So next time don’t miss your annual eye  check-up. We care for your vision
